Challenges and Discontent Surround New City Power Load-Shedding Schedule Implementation

Since the City of Johannesburg’s power utility, City Power, assumed control of its load-shedding schedule from Eskom, residents have faced increased uncertainty. The new schedule has led to longer hours without electricity.

Challenges and Discontent Surround New City Power Load-Shedding Schedule Implementation

City’s New Load-Shedding Schedule:

The city decided to manage its own load-shedding schedule, aiming to limit power outages to just two hours, even up to stage 8. This approach sought to provide the city with the ability to determine where load shedding occurs while adhering to Eskom’s megawatt requirements in times of severe strain on the system.

Commitment to Resident Welfare:

City officials, including Environment and Infrastructure Services MMC Jack Sekwala, expressed their commitment to minimizing the impact of load shedding on residents.

Implementing the New Schedule:

The new schedule was put into action, with the goal of eliminating four-hour blackouts and maintaining a maximum of two hours of load shedding up to stage 8.

This was intended to reduce the frequency of power cuts, with customers experiencing shedding only once between stages 1 and possibly 3 within a five-day period, avoiding consecutive days of shedding.

Issues and Complaints:

Despite the intentions, there have been complaints about inaccuracies and inconvenience related to the new schedule. Some areas still experienced four-hour power cuts, contrary to expectations.

City Power’s statement led to the belief that regardless of the load-shedding stage, residents would face only two hours of outages daily.

Lack of Preparation Time:

Some residents found the new schedule challenging, especially because it was uploaded late, leaving insufficient time for residents to prepare or adjust to the changes.

Need for Clarity:

Councillors and residents called for more detailed information about area categorization and zoning to decipher the new schedule efficiently and reduce anxiety.

There was concern about whether City Power could effectively address faults and outages during higher stages of load shedding, especially with limited time between slots.

City Power’s Response:

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena acknowledged customer concerns, especially in the northern suburbs, and pointed to technical errors during the schedule transition.

Efforts were being made to rectify the situation, ensuring proper allocation of blocks in the schedule.

Block Rotation:

The schedule is structured around 16 blocks, with each block repeating only after all blocks have been load-shed in a day.

Any discrepancies or confusion were attributed to technical issues during the schedule transition.

Apology and Rectification:

City Power apologized for the confusion and pledged to resolve the issues, ensuring a smoother implementation of the new load-shedding schedule.
