“Load-shedding was suspended this morning at 01:35,” Eskom said.

“The second stage of load-shedding will begin at 7:00 a.m. EST today and end at 16:00 a.m. EST on Monday.

OCGT power stations still require emergency diesel reserves, leading to stage 2 and stage 4 load-shedding, according to the utility.

There is an adequate supply of water in the pumped storage dams for the coming week. There have been improvements in the diesel levels at the OCGT power stations, but they remain low.”

On Sunday, 16 July, load-shedding will take place as follows

  • 01:35 until 08:00 — No load-shedding

  • 08:00 until 16:00 — Stage 2

  • 16:00 until 05:00 on Monday — Stage 4 load-shedding

During the weekend, Eskom announced permanent stage 6 load shedding to replenish emergency reserves on Thursday, 13 July.

Due to the cold weather, the power utility experienced substantially higher demand, which requires sufficient generation reserves.

“The cold weather, particularly on Monday and Tuesday, caused the demand for electricity to increase,” the company wrote.

“The demand exceeded what was expected, however.

To buffer the impact of the cold weather, Eskom made extensive use of emergency reserves on Monday and Tuesday, 9 and 10 July
